Leonard Olaf Winterton was the youngest son of five children born to Peder (Peter) and Wilhelmina (Minnie) Winterton. He was nicknamed "Dutch" (from the Flying Dutchman) because he could run so fast as a child. His parents divorced when he was very young and his mother subsequently moved the family to Omaha, NE where he was raised.
He was in officer's training school when the WWI ended. He pursued his education at a college level and was fortunate to work during the depression as a social worker. He moved to California in the late thirties and worked as a security guard at a movie studio. He moved his family to Vermont where he owned a farm for several years. He sold his farm after developing pneumonia and went to Arizona to recover. From there he returned to California and worked as a contract administrator for Hughes Aircraft in Culver City. He retired to Chico, CA and later to Fresno, CA.
