He and Mary Jo Arnold married twice---March 8, 1947, in Goree, Knox County, Texas, and September 20, 1952, in Abilene, Taylor County, Texas---and divorced twice. As a prerequisite for marrying Mary Jo a second time, he underwent a vasectomy.
He and Berniece Hutchings married December 12, 1953, and remained married until his death.
After the suicide of his ex-wife Mary Jo in May 1962, his three daughters stayed the summer with him, his wife Berniece, and Berniece's half-sister Mary Jo Lowery in Pecos, Texas. (Mary Jo (b. 1948) was living full time with Dalton and Berniece.) As soon as the three sisters were returned to Billy Arledge and his fiancée Wilma in Galveston at summer's end, they were sent back to Pecos. They were very soon legally adopted by Dalton.
In 1966 or 1967 Berniece's half-sister Mary Jo Lowery ran away from the house in Pecos. Dalton's oldest daughter Linda ran away from the house in Denton, Texas, not long after her high school graduation. Pam and Karen ran away from that same house in May 1968 the night of Pam's high school graduation. Their sister Linda, who lived in Houston, and a Denton Sr. High School teacher Mrs. Emma Joe Yarbrough (FAG #143067155), made possible their escape to Houston.
Berniece and Dalton's daughter Marion Berniece Jones was born more than a week later in Denton.
