He was a grandson of slaveowners in Newton, Mississippi.

When he was single and 26 years old, Marion Jones got pregnant two young women ages 17 and 19. Both bore babies, the first one a male named Dalton born April 23, 1928, and the second one a female named Maxine born May 18, 1928 .

Marion married Gladys Worley September 2, 1927 about the time a charge of rape was brought against him by lawyers of the parents of the 19 year old named Thursa Tidwell. Marion was acquitted at the end of a second trial. ( A critical witness for the prosecution named Ross Bates (1880-1966) went missing throughout each trial. Transcripts of Marion's two trials are on file at the Knox County Courthouse.)

In the meantime Maxine's mother Thursa lost her best friend Grace Jones, Marion's sister, and missed completion of her senior year in high school.

Years later, after having had five children, Marion and Gladys divorced. In contrast, Thursa married at age 41 and lived happily the rest of her life.

About 90 years after Dalton's and Maxine's births, DNA analysis of Thursa's granddaughter Mary Ellen Fields Meek and of Gladys's granddaughter Karen Lee Jones Langridge proves familial connection. The missing local witness for the prosecution in the two rape trials suggests that justice was denied to the Tidwells in 1928.
