She is the first child, born as Hendriktje, named for her paternal grandmother Hindrikje Pieters Winter, in the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, in the village Meedhuizen, just south of the sea harbour city Delfzijl.
On 5 April 1893 she arrived with her parents on the SS Werkendam at New York and resided for ten years in a very tiny Dutch settlement 22 miles east of Maxwell in northeast New Mexico. Then they moved about 1904 to Manhatten in southwest Montana, Gallatin County, near the also very tiny Dutch settlements Amsterdam and Holland.
