She was born Tjakka Vrugt in May 1865 in the country village of Siddeburen, located in the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, daughter of farmer Geert Vrugt and Anna Margaretha Huisman.

On May 2, 1890 she married in Delfzijl, located in the northeastern part of province Groningen.

On April 5, 1893 the couple arrived with their two years aged daughter Hendriktje (Hattie) on the SS Werkendam at New York. Their destination was a tiny Dutch settlement located 22 miles east of Maxwell in the northeastern part of New Mexico.
