At the age of 16 Alexander came to America with his family on the steamer Belgic arriving New York in 1856. The family arrived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in October. In December he traveled by stage to Stevens Point where he worked as a clerk in the United States Land Office. He stayed there for eighteen months before entering the employment of Charles Hoeflinger, his brother-in-law and a local merchant. Six months later Abraham Brawley asked if he would become the head clerk back at the land office. He worked there until Brawley left the office.

At Brawley departure Alexander considered going to California with his to become a merchant with his uncle Fridolin Grimm. His parents disapproved and he went to Constableville, Lewis County, New York instead, staying about a year. He returned to Fond du Lac and worked six months at Hopkins and Serve's dry goods store.

Alex always wanted to be in business for himself. In January of 1863, he and his brother Charlie established "C. Krembs and Bro. Hardware" store in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, from what had been Charles' tin shop. Alex had to raise money to get Charlie to agree to the partnership.

He was a founding member of the Eintrachts Verein (Good Fellowship Association) German Singing Society in Steven's Point in 1885. Alexander served the Stevens Point Community as City Assessor for one term, City Treasurer for two terms, and Alderman for the 1st Ward for two terms.
His death was the result of a stroke.
