Moritz came to the US with his brother Charles in December 1854. At that time he was intially employed as a druggist in Milwaukee and later accepted a pharmacy position in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

After a business failure in Fond du Lac his fortunes changed and he became a very successful business man. He operated a drug store in Chicago, Illinois, owned a commercial farm operation in Racine, Wisconsin and maunufactured a number of consumer products. He had a display for his chicory business at the 1893 Chicago World Exposition.
