In 1862 Charlie began his own hardware business. He entered into a partnership with his brother Alex creating the firm of C. Krembs and Brother Hardware in Stevens Point. The store became a major supplier of tools and materials to the lumber industry in the Wisconsin River Valley.
His death was the result of an accidental self inflicted gun shot.
