Charlie came to the United States with his brother, Moritz, in October of 1854. He originally lived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin where worked as a tinsmith. Then moved to Wausau and finally Stevens Point, Wisconsin. In 1861 he lived Stevens Point and worked for Ed Foot, who had a hardware business in town.

In 1862 Charlie began his own hardware business. He entered into a partnership with his brother Alex creating the firm of C. Krembs and Brother Hardware in Stevens Point. The store became a major supplier of tools and materials to the lumber industry in the Wisconsin River Valley.

His death was the result of an accidental self inflicted gun shot.
