Ernst became a druggist like his father. In the 1860's he studied his craft in München, Germany. Shortly after his return from Europe (in about 1869), he traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and secured a position with a pioneer druggist of that city.
In 1871 Ernst operated a branch store at the corner of 1st and Greenfield Streets in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1873 he bought the business, operating it until his death in 1907.
