Ruth Irene Welch Smith died August 11, 2006, in Montrose, Colorado. Memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City, 1001 N.W. 25th St., at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 22, 2006. Ruth was born December 14, 1911 in Talihina, OK, and grew up in Antlers, OK. She attended business college in Dallas, Texas. In 1933, she moved to Oklahoma City to begin a career with the State of Oklahoma, working ten years for the Oklahoma Tax Commission, later for the State Legislative Council and the State Senate for many years, and retiring as Chief Clerk of the Senate in 1979. In 1939, she married Harvey W. Smith and was active with him in Smith Printing, Ltd. She was also an organizing member in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Oklahoma City Club of Printing House Craftsmen. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of and volunteer for numerous professional and civic groups including the Kemp Concert Series, Oklahoma City Art Museum, Lyric Theatre Guild, and retired officers' wives. She was an active member of the National Secretaries Association and by a program of skills testing, earned the rank of Certified Professional Secretary. She also organized several Pushmataha County reunions. Ruth was proud of her Chickasaw heritage. She began snow skiing in 1961 and later joined the Oklahoma City Ski Club, enjoying many ski trips to Colorado and New Mexico. She traveled extensively with Friendship Force and came away with friends in countries all over the world. Traveling was her major interest and making friends was her special talent. She also enjoyed theatre, movies, and musical performances. Survivors include her daughter, Janet Sims of Montrose, CO; her son, Douglas N. Smith of Guthrie; one granddaughter, Ashley Graham-Smith of Oklahoma City; and several special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, seven brothers and two sisters. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1001 N.W. 25th St., Okla. City, OK 73106.
