--Former State Justice Dies Following Heart Attack--Former Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice, Earl Welch, a key figure in the state's greatest judicial scandal, died Wednesday in Oklahoma City of an apparant heart attack...

...Born in 1892 near Wister, Welch received his early education in small Indian Territorial schools at Bengal, Poteau, Talihina, and Antlers. He attended the University of Oklahoma Law School for three years but was forced to drop out and go to work to make a living and repay some debts. Following the custom of that day, Welch was admitted to the bar in 1911 when he passed the bar examinations after reading law in the office of his father and grandfather.

He opened a law office at Antlers, and practiced there for 14 years before servicing 6 years as a district judge in Pushmataha, Choctaw and McCurtain counties. He was elected to the Oklahoma Supreme Court in 1933 and several times served as chief justice.

Funeral services for Welch will be at 11 am Friday at Hahn-Cook, Street & Draper with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee.

Survivors include his widow, Ruby; three sons, James and Norman, both of OKC; and Byron, Washington DC; one brother, Dan of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Mrs Mable Amend and Mrs Harvey W Smith, both of OKC; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
