Driving directions: Located on the SE corner of the intersection of N. Kelley Ave. and E. Memorial Rd. in north Oklahoma City. Take US Hwy 77 north (aka Broadway Extension) to the Memorial Rd. exit. The exit comes up to N. Kelley Ave. just south of Memorial Rd. The cemetery can easily be seen across the road. Turn right (south). The two entrances to the cemetery are 0.1 to 0.25 miles the left (east).
History (submitted by J. Prewitt):
Established in 1927 by a board of trustees, Memorial Park Cemetery is situated on 175 acres, replete with a wonderful assortment of established trees and beautiful landscaping. Over the last 80 years, Memorial Park Cemetery has been a source of comfort and inspiration to many families, including many who played prominent roles in both Oklahoma and U.S. history.
The unique architectural features of Memorial Park Cemetery were developed early in the cemetery history. The brick and rock fence which surrounds the cemetery on two sides, the two "guard shacks" on either side of the main entrance, and the Historic Chapel, centered between the entrance roads, were all designed and built by cemetery employees in the late 1920s.
The cornerstone of the Bell Tower, which rises high above the prairie landscape, was laid on November 11, 1928. The Reflection Pond, adjacent to the Bell Tower, has for years provided a tranquil setting for families to honor the memory of their loved ones.
In 1998 the mausoleum with an open-air chapel for committal services and quiet reflection was completed. The 2007 acquisition of the funeral home across the street west of the Historic Chapel completed the facilities and established Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery as a convenient single destination for all funeral, cremation and cemetery needs.
The beautiful Reflection Pond has been fully restored with two fountains and private and gated estate areas have been added to the cemetery. The complete interior renovation of the Historic Chapel provides a great space for funerals, memorial services, receptions, family gatherings and community events.
