She taught for a short time at a small rural school at Zim, Minnesota, which is located along the Duluth Missabe & Northern Railway. She met George Charles Widner, a timber cruiser, and they married 7 Aug 1903. She moved to Alpena, Michigan, the home of her husband, and their two daughters were born there: Virginia, born in 1904, and Elizabeth, born in 1909. She returned to Duluth with her children about 1911, and was divorced 25 May 1912, age 30. She resided with her sister Agnes and her husband Sigurd A Rhode for a short time, and then returned to her parents' home at 317 North 22nd Avenue West, living with her mother and sisters. Her daughters lived there also. She was employed by Thygensen's, a drygoods (department) store. It is not clear when she began work there; it may have been about 1916 or 1917. She continued to be employed there into the 1930s. She lived in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, for a period. She returned to Duluth, resided a short time with Sigurd Rhode and his wife, and then with her daughter Virginia and her husband Norman C Gjerberg, at 730 North 16th Avenue East. In 1955 or 1956 when Virginia and Norman moved to Florida, she moved in with her sister Nina at her home on West Mankato Street in Duluth.

Obituary from the "News-Tribune" of Duluth, Minnesota dated Sunday 8 Nov 1971:
Mrs. Stella L. Berg Widner, 89, of 127 W. Mankato St., died Saturday in a Duluth hospital. She was a native of Duluth and attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. William C. (Virginia) Smith, Venice, Fla., and Mrs. C. R. (Elizabeth) Walford [sic], Rolla, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Matt Roberts, Duluth, and Mrs. L. E. Lambert, Virginia; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
