Born Catherine Phipps, the daughter of Major John and Barbara Kelse Huffman Phipps in Irwin Township. She married Joseph E. Martin on November 25, 1852. She and Joeseph were the parents of Mary Ann (Surrena), Barbara Ellen (Beach), James, John Phipps, Richard Hoffman, Jackson P., Thomas, Elizabeth Emma (Emery), Wilhelmina (McConnell), William, Rev. Dr. David Lorenzo and Maud Ethel (Shawgo) Martin.

Mrs. Catherine Martin, widow of Joseph Martin, died at old homestead Saturday, April 5, at 3:00 a.m. from cancer of the stomach after a long illness. Mother of large family, all of whom but one survive as follows: Mrs. Albert Surrena, Harrisville; Mrs. John Buck [Beach], Rockland; James Martin, Missouri; John, Richard and Thomas Martin, Irwin township; Mrs. E.B. Emery, Canton, Ohio; Mrs Thomas McConnell, Grove City; David B. Martin, U.S. Army Medical Corps; Mrs. Frank Shawgo, Grove City. Church of God, Barkeyville where services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. St. Clair with interment in Log Church cemetery.
