Born in Irwin Township, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Blakely Martin. On Novermber 25, 1852 he was married to Catherine Phipps. He and Catherine became the parents of Mary Ann, Barbara Ellen, James, John Phipps, Richard Hoffman, Jackson P., Thomas, Elizabeth Emma, Wilhelmina, William, Dr. David Lorenzo and Maud Ethel Martin.
