Mrs. Amos Green Burgess

Mrs. Annie Ada Burgess. 83, of Alexandria, died Monday night, Oct. 21, at 9 o'clock, at the St. Joseph hospital, Keokuk, Iowa. She had been a patient there six hours.

Mrs. Burgess was born Dec. 17, 1879, in Maidstone, Kent County, England, a daughter of Thomas and Ellen Mortimer. The family came to the United States when she was a small child. She was married to Amos Green Burgess Feb. 9, 1898, at Keokuk, Iowa. He preceded her in death Oct. 14, 1961, at the age of 102 years.

Thirteen children were born to the union, of whom survive six sons: Bille Burgess, Wyaconda, Glen and Albert, Keokuk, Ia., Elmer and Howard, Alexandria; two daughters, Mrs. Etta Kussman, Keokuk, Ia. and Mrs. Viola Richards, Osceola, Neb., on step-son, Edward Burgess, of Indiana; two brothers, Fuller and James Mortimer, Alexandria; one sister, Mrs. Emma Arnold, Wayland; three half-brothers and more than one hundred grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Besides five children and her husband, Mrs. Burgess was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Gertie Russell and Mrs. Susan Ealey and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Burgess was a Methodist. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, Oct. 24, at 3 o'clock at the Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, conducted by the Rev. Richard S. Golden of Kahoka. Burial will be in the Frazee Cemetery southeast of Wayland.

Immigration: Arrived in New York from Liverpool, England aboard the White Star Lines "SS Celtic" on August 7, 1882. Passengers: Ellen Mortimer, Fuller Mortimer, Annie Mortimer, Emma Mortimer, Arthur Mortimer, Percy Mortimer and Edwin Mortimer.
