Joseph "Joe" Miazga, age 93, longtime Rhinelander resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb.13, 2011, at Grace Lodge. Joe was born March 29, 1917, in Chicago, the son of Peter and Katherine (Kania) Miazga. He was a 1934 graduate of Rhinelander High School, and he furthered his education at U.W. Madison where he received his degree in accounting. Following his graduation from college, Joe was drafted in the Army Air Corps (later the Air Force ) and served during World War II for 4 1/2 years. Joe served in the ATC air transport command, flying the Atlantic Ocean for 18 months to Africa, Burma, and England, then spent another 18 months flying the Pacific Ocean to Tinian, Saipan, Okinawa, Tokyo, and other points. Joe was honorably discharged in December of 1945.

Upon his return to Wisconsin, Joe pursued his CPA certification and received it in 1947. In 1949, he purchased Rhinelander Office Supply (ROSCO) and managed it until 1979 when it was purchased by his son Steve. Joe married the former Gay O'Malley on Feb. 5, 1949, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.




Joe was very active in the community over the years. He served on the board of directors of the Heart O' Lakes Savings and Loan and the boards for the Rhinelander Brewing Company, Marplex, Inc., and the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry. He helped raise money for the food pantry and for the Rhinelander Youth Center and building. He further served on three scholarship committees and coached the Rotary baseball team in the Babe Ruth League for five years. He was a 60- year member of the Rhinelander Rotary Club and recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow.

He was also a 60- year member of the Rhinelander Country Club. Joe followed sports, especially the Packers, Badgers, and Brewers, sometimes attending those games in person, but mostly on TV.

Joe was also a life member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, and the U.W. Alumni Association.

Joe is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gay, of Rhinelander; a son, Steven (Jenny) Miazga, Pewaukee; two daughters, Jane (Dick) Andrey, Aiken, S.C., and Nancy (Craig) Miazga Sinard, Plymouth, Minn.; a brother, John (Nancy) Miazga; and a sister, Ann Manning, all of Rhinelander; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by brothers, Stanley and Hank; and sisters, Liz, Helen and Sr. Zita.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Feb.17, 2011, from Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church -St. Mary's Site at 11 a.m. with Father John Gerritts officiating.

Joe's family will greet friends at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Mass.

Full military honors will follow the Memorial Mass. Inurnment will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
