October 3, 2001, Rhinelander Daily News: Henry L. "Hank" Miazga, age 81, of Rhinelander, died at home on October 1, 2001. He was born on January 8, 1920 in Sugar Camp, the son of Peter and Katherine (Kania) Miazga.

He was a 1938 graduate of Rhinelander High School. He later served in the United States Army Air Corps, from 1941-1945 as an in-flight mechanic aboard the B-17 Bombers. On September 16, 1950, he married Laura Bixby in Rhinelander. He was involved in Boy Scouts, coached Little League baseball and was active in the city horseshoe leagues. To his credit, he was the youngest supervisor elected to the County Board at that time, serving the eighth ward from 1948-1982. He was the board's vice chairman from 1972-1976. He also served as alderman for his district for numerous years. He helped establish West Side Park and public boat landings on area lakes. He was a member of the DNR task force to improve the water quality of the upper Wisconsin River. He also volunteered in the adult volunteer tutor program at West School.

He was an avid outdoorsman and collector of antique fishing collectibles. He worked for the Rhinelander Paper Company for over 40 years, primarily as a millwright, retiring in 1983. He was a life-long member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church. Hank was known for his pranks. He often would pretend to fish in his flooded backyard to amuse the neighborhood children, reeling in fish caught on an earlier fishing trip. He was a great husband, father and grandfather, teaching them his love of nature.

He is survived by his wife, Laura; seven children, Pete (Marla) Miazga of Rhinelander, Patricia (Curt) Simmons of Portage, MIch., Vicki Miazga of Woodruff, Ed Miazga of Rhinelander, Chris (Tony) Sisel of Rhinelander, Donna (Gerald) Miazga-Urben of Waunakee, Wis., and Mark (Linda) Miazga of St. Paul, Minn.; three brothers, Stan (Vi) Miazga, Joe (Gay) Miazga and John (Nancy) Miazga, all of Rhinelander; two sisters, Sister Zita Miazga of Manitowoc, and Ann Manning of Rhinelander; and seven grandchildren, Travis and Katy Miazga, Zachary and Emily Sisel, Andrew Simmons, and Sophie and Chloe Urben.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Barbara; two win granddaughters, Anna Leigh and Katherine; and two sisters, Elizabeth Guthneck and Helen Gilley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11a.m., Thursday, October 4, at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, with his nephew, Father Peter Guthneck officiating. Internment will be in Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4p.m. to 7:30p.m., with a prayer service from 7:30p.m. until 8p.m., Wednedsay, October 3, at the HIldebrand-Darton-Russ Funeral Home, 365-4343.
