A son of Tunis and Francinah Adams Peters, Tunis Jr. was born in Hampshire Co., Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1789. He was a leather worker, and also served as a J.P. and Judge. He came to Ohio with his parents and siblings in the early 1800s. He married Mary Eva Glaze 28 Feb 1811 in Pickaway Co., Ohio. Their children were: Jonathan L., George W., Elizabeth G., Susannah, and Newton Peters.
