Deborah was born in Hampshire County, in what was then part of Virginia but is now West Virginia. [Thanks to contributor Jeffrey Gorball for the update.] (Note that Hampshire County in 1785 encompassed what is now Hampshire, Hardy, Grant, Mineral, and part of Morgan Counties and by 1787 had ceded the modern Hardy and Grant counties to form Hardy County, so Deborah's birth place does not necessarily fall within the modern boundaries of Hampshire County.)
