Green Lawn Cemetery was established in 1849 as the other local cemeteries, Franklinton (opened in 1799) North Graveyard (opened in 1812) and East Graveyard (opened in 1841) were too small to accommodate the growing population. After completion, families with loved ones at both Franklinton and North began to moved their loved ones to Green Lawn and by 1881, all burials at North had been moved.
Today more that 155,000 folks are buried at Green Lawn including over 6000 veterans buried in seven military sections and thousands more buried with families. One of those sections contain the remains of soldier, family members and civilians who were originally buried at Columbus Barracks Cemetery, which closed in 1896. Old military records called this section of Green Lawn Columbus Barracks Reserve.
