Jacob Bogaard, son of Herman Bogaard and Gyshe Ver Steeg, was born on a farm east of Pella on March 12, 1887. He was united in marriage with Nellie Synhorst, her death occurring in 1934, at Belle Plaine, Iowa, where they were making their home on a farm at the time. On the 16th of June, 1937, he was married to Mrs. John Van Ginkel, the former Lucy Witzenburg at Pella. With the exception of a few years spent at Belle Plaine, his entire life was spent in the Pella area. On the evening of Sept. 1, 1960, he passed away at Mercy hospital in Oskaloosa after a brief hospitalization. He had attained the age of 73 years. During World War I he served in the United States Army. His church membership was in the First Reformed Church at Pella. He was a member of the Van Veen-Van Hemert Post No. 89 of American Legion of Pella. Surviving him besides his wife are four brothers and two sisters; Arie Bogaard of New Sharon, Nicholas Bogaard of Des Moines, Herman Bogaard of Flandreau, S. D., Joseph Bogaard of Long Beach, Calif., Grace, Mrs. L. H. Vander Linden of Pella, and Marie, Mrs. Ben Dawson of Dixon, Calif. Preceding him in death were 1 brother, Cornelius, and 2 sisters, Winnie, Mrs. Bieshaar, and Jennie, Mrs. Peter Schakel. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 5, with family prayer services conducted by the Rev. Richard De Jong at the chapel of the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home followed by services at the First Reformed Church with the Rev. Anthony Haverkamp officiating. Mrs. Dick De Heus and Mrs. Marvin Tysseling sang two numbers accompanied by Wesley Vos at the organ. Casket bearers were nephews: Lawrence and Herman Bogaard, Kenneth VanderLinden, Bernie J. Van Roekel, Robert Witzenberg, Andrew Mennings. Burial was made in the Oakwood cemetery at Pella. - Pella Chronicle, September 8, 1960
