Herman Bogaard, 83, died Sunday afternoon at four-fifteen o'clock at the Home for the aged, following an illness of nearly two years, half of which time he was confined to his bed. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Home for the Aged, Reverend F. De Jong, officiating. Interment was in Oakwood. Mr. Bogaard's parents came here in 1849 when his brother, now deceased, was only nine weeks old. At that time Pella was a "straw village," and there was only one store here. Mr. Bogaard was a man of fine character and exemplified the traits of the pioneer Holland stock. He had a host of friends who regret his departure. Mr. Herman Bogaard, son of Arie Bogaard, was born near Pella on January 20, 1853. At an early age he engaged in farming and continued in this occupation until March 1, 1908. He was united in marriage to Gysie Versteeg on March 9, 1877. To this union 13 children were born. At the age of 24 years he confessed his faith in Christ and his Savior and united with the Fourth Reformed church, which church he served in the capacity of a deacon, remained with the Christian Reformed church until departing this life. On December 25, 1905, his wife preceded him death, also three infant children and two married daughters, Mrs. Winnie Bieshaar, who died on May 22, 1906, and Mrs. Jennie Schakel, who died on April 2, 1922. In later life he was married to Mrs. L. Vanderlinden, who preceded him in death. On March 9, 1916 he was united in marriage to Mrs. A. Engbers who also preceded him in death.

On March 1, 1923 he entered the Home for the Aged where he lived until Sunday, May 17, 1936, when he departed this life at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 27 days, at 4:15 pm. He leaves to survive him six sons and two daughters, namely, Arie Bogaard of Pella, Cornelius Bogaard of Leighton, Nicholas Bogaard of Marysville, Jacob Bogaard of Pella, Herman Bogaard of Wingate, New Mexico, Mrs. Grace Vanderlinden of Pella, Mrs. Marie Dawson of Dixon, California and Joseph Bogaard of Chicago, also one brother, Mr. David Bogaard of Muscatine, Iowa as well as 11 grandchildren.
