Walter Nation, 84, who lived most of his life in north Tama and nearby, died about 10 o'clock Sunday night at his home in Garwin. He had been in failing health the last three years, but was up and about daily until December 30, when he was stricken seriously ill, and had been confined to bed since. Mr. Nation was born in Geneseo township, July 29, 1878, a son of William F. and Sarah Bower Nation, and was reared to manhood in that community. He married Bessie Powell February 14, 1906. They farmed many years in the LaPorte City, Hudson, Dike and Traer communities. Mr. and Mrs. Nation retired in 1955, after farming several years west of Traer on the place now operated by Will Lass. They bought a home in Garwin, their home since.

Mrs. Nation survives her husband, and there are seven living children; Mrs. Harry Johannsen, of LaPorte City; Archie and Dale, living at home at Garwin; Mrs. Elliott Smith, of Hudson; Mrs. L. J (Dorothy) Philp, near Traer; Donald of Marshalltown; and Roger, farming south of Traer. A son, Bryce, died at the age of 17. Mr. Nation also leaves 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. One grandson, Wesley Nation, preceded him in death. Walter is also survived by two brothers: Oma, who lives in the Western Old People's Home at Cedar Falls; and Jesse, of Waterloo; and by two sisters, Mrs. Jake (Pearle) Freese, in Texas, and Mrs. Mayme Henning, in California. Three brothers, William, Ora and Ernest, and three sisters, Sarah, Olive and Mildred, preceded Walter in death.

Services for Mr. Nation were held Wednesday afternoon in the Erickson Funeral Home in Traer conducted by the Rev. G. E. MacGanon, pastor of the Garwin Evangelical United Brethren church. Mrs. Arthur Calderwood sang, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Leroy Whannel. Casket bearers were all members of Hesperia lodge, A. F. & A. M., of Traer: Leland Owens, Paul Fleming, John Reuman, Don Farland, Leonard Vorba and Evan Wilson.
