BESSIE NATION

Funeral services for Bessie I. Nation, 101, of Traer, will be held at 1:30 Thursday afternoon, Feb. 27, at Overton Funeral Home. Burial will be in Buckingham Cemetery. She died Monday, Feb. 24, at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer. The Rev. David Nolte will officiate at the service, and organist will be Judy Mason. Casket bearers are James Johannsen, Harlan Smith, Edward Smith, Tony Philip, Gary Nation and Michael Nation. On the flower committee will be Mr. and Mrs. Don Fairchild and Mr. and Mrs. Evan Wilson.

Born January 20, 1885, in Athens County, Ohio, she was the daughter of Reuben and Rachel (Funk) Powell. Following the death of her mother, she moved to Iowa with her father and other members of the family. She learned the dressmaking trade at Waterloo and she enjoyed sewing, gardening and crocheting. On February 14, 1906, she was married to Walter Nation at the home of her father, and the couple farmed near Traer and several surrounding communities until retiring to Garwin. Bessie moved to Traer after the death of her husband in January of 1963. She had been a resident of Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer since her health failed in November of 1982.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three sons Archie, Dale and Bryce. She is survived by two sons, Roger of Traer, and Donald of Waterloo; three daughters, Dorothy Philip of Traer, Bernice Johannsen of LaPorte City, and Ercell Smith of Hudson; as well as 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
