He was a partner in Aircraft Associates in Long Beach. They manufactured 22 J-2 Western Cubs between 1936 and 1938. He had been seriously ill with bronchial pneumonia, but had left his sick bed to make a series of demonstration flights in a small canary yellow monoplane. According to a newspaper article, he had been executing "wing-overs" at a height of 600 feet near the airport in Salinas on May 8, 1936. When he failed to pull the aircraft under control, it whirled rapidly four times and struck on its nose in a lettuce field adjoining the airport. He was critically injured and died the same day.
