The family believed that Herbert died because of a druggist's mistake in the medicine he was given. Lottie said it had little white bitter particles in it. She gave him only 1/2 tsp. instead of the recommended 1 tsp. He went into convulsions and although the doctor came, he died that night. Shortly thereafter, out of grief, the family moved to a place near Minneapolis, Kansas. Herbert was the only one of John and Lottie's children that didn't live until adulthood.
