Richard A. Alters, 74, of Spring Mills died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at home.

Born Feb. 18, 1926, in Penn Township, he was a son of the late James N. and Hattie M. Shawver Alters. On Jan. 17, 1953, in Millheim, he married Maybelle V. Corman, who survives at home.

He was a 1945 graduate of East Penns Valley High School in Millheim.

An Army veteran, he served for 18 months during the Korean War in the 69th Infantry Division in Korea.

For 33 years, he farmed while working as an inspector at Cerro Metal Products in Bellefonte.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Millheim, Centre County Farm Bureau, Millheim American Legion Keystone Post 444, Spring Mills Fire Company, Millheim Fire Company, and was a 55-year-member of Spring Mills Grange 158.

For many years, he served on the Democratic Committee for Penn Township.

He enjoyed camping and fishing in Canada and was a member of the Good Sam Camping Organization.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann A. Orndorf of Centre Hall; two sons, Andrew R. of Spring Mills and Garry E. of Smullton; two sisters, Bernice Snyder and Frances Byers, both of Millheim; a brother, Leon N. of Bellefonte; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A sister and six brothers preceded him in death.
