Bernice Mae Alters Snyder April 30, 1921 March 11, 2014

Bernice Mae Alters Snyder, 92, of Millheim, passed away at her home after being lovingly attended by caregivers Frances, Jackie, Lexi, Tori and the Home Nursing Agency hospice team. Born on April 30, 1921, in Coburn, Bernice was a daughter of the late James N. and Hattie Mae Shawver Alters. She attended Penn Township School. On August 6, 1944, Bernice married the love of her life, Miles E. Snyder, who preceded her in death, breaking a union of 52 years. Bernice was employed at the Millheim Silk Mill, the Hosiery Mill and retired from Gettig Engineering and Pharmaceuticals in June of 1989. Bernice was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ in Spring Mills. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens, crocheting many beautiful afghan, doilies and dolls, collecting knick-knacks, and shopping with her sister, Frances, and most recently her aide, Shirley. Her nieces and nephews enjoyed her pride in canning for many years, especially her pickles and sauerkraut. Though she did not have her own children to nurture, she was an awesome mother and friend to many of her siblings and families. She will be greatly missed. Bernice is survived by her sister, Frances Byers, with whom she lived with for 18 years; three sisters-in-law; plus many nieces and nephews who blessed Bernice's life and loved her; and last but not least, her faithful canine companion, Ginger. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Goldie Smith; and brothers, Paul, Lawrence, Elmer, Jay, Ralph, Richard, Leon and Dean Alters. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Salem United Church of Christ, Route 45, Spring Mills. The celebration of Bernice's life will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Chaplain Chris Thomas officiating. Bernice will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery in Millheim. Contributions in her memory may be given to Home Nursing Agency, 450 Windmere Dr., State College, PA 16801 or to Salem United Church of Christ, c/o Helen Sweeley, 125B Brush Mountain Road, Spring Mills, PA 16875.
