As a child, James suffered a loss of speech and hearing as a result of scarlet fever. He, along with his brother Pearley, attended the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Romney, West Virginia.
Per the 1910 census, James was employed as a glass worker. He was living in the Magnolia District of Wetzel County, WV in the home of his brother-in-law Charles E. Hunt.
James never married. He died as a result of being hit by a train.
