Emery was born in Lone Tree, Tyler County, WV. He was the fifth son of George Washington Eller and his wife, Charlotte Miller, both of Ohio. He grew up on his parents' farm in Tyler County.

Emery's first wife was Virginia (AKA "Jennie" & "Midge") Coalman. They were married in Ironton, Lawrence, Ohio on December 14, 1916 by a JP. At that time, Emery resided in Parkersburg, Marion, WV and was a fireman.

By June 1917, per Emery's World War I draft registration card, they were living at 133 High Street in Grafton. He was a brakeman for the B & O Railroad. He was described as medium in height and build, with blue eyes and light hair.

By the 1930 census, Emery was no longer married and was listed as a taxi driver.

His second wife was Beatrice Arnold. Emery and Bea had 4 daughters. The first, Pattie Sue, died on 10/10/1936 of asphyxiation, caused by a bone lodged in her trachea. They had three more daughters - Janice, Adalene and Doris Nell.

In the 1940 census, Emery was listed as owner of a taxi company. Bea's 17 year old son was living with them.

Emery died of congestive heart failure at Grafton City Hospital.
