He was a coal miner for many years and attended the Freewill Baptist Church at Old Kyger. Son of Lewis Horken Spires & Pansy M Welsh Spires.
Married to Rita B Mickey Spires (daughter of Joseph Bernard Mickey).
Father of Martha Lou Spires Fry, Donna Spires Bourne, Gene Spires, Robert Spires, Jerry Spires.
