Chico Enterprise-Record, Chico, CA, Tuesday, March 30, 1954: "Butte Pioneer Dies; Funeral Set for Tomorrow at 2 p.m. Funeral services for John Henry Abbey, who died Sunday at an Oroville hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Sanford's Funeral Chapel in Oroville.

"A member of a pioneer Butte County family. Mr. Abbey was 81 years old. His father, one of the county's early settlers, came to the county in 1851 and his son was born in the Central House area.

"Mr. Abbey farmed in East Biggs for about 40 years before retiring seven years ago and moving to Oroville. He was active in livestock and rodeo shows and is remembered for winning the Pacific Coast bronc championship.

"Survivors include his wife, Isabel; four sisters, Mrs. Nana Cummins and Mrs. Estella Hale, both of Gridley, Mrs. Elsie Crosman of San Carlos, and Marguerite Anderson of Menlo Park; two brothers, Samuel D. Abbey of Gridley and R.H. Abbey of San Francisco.

"He was preceded in death by his brother, the late Edward Abbey of Oroville. Interment will be in the family plot in the Oroville Cemetery."
