Oroville Mercury Register, Oroville, CA, Saturday, January 31, 1970: "Samuel D. Abbey. Samuel D. Abbey, 93, Gridley, died Wednesday in a Chico convalescent hospital.

"A native of Central House District and a life-long resident of the county, Mr. Abbey was born Nov. 1, 1876. Before his retirement he had been a horse and mule trader. He held membership in Oroville Lodge 1484, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

"Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Marguerite Anderson, and one niece, Mrs. Abbey Bowen, both of Mineral Park, Santa Clara County.

"Rosary will be recited tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. in Block Funeral Home, Gridley. Catholic services, with the Rev. Patrick Corkell of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gridley, officiating, will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Oroville Lodge 1484, PBOE, will also officiate. Interment will be in the old Oroville Cemetery."
