Young Marion Costley was swimming in the Tuolumne river when his feet became tangled in a portion of a fishing net and chicken wire. His daughter Bessie standing on the bank nearby saw him raise his hand and wave but there was no outcry. Then he disappeared. It was several hours before his body was recovered.
