Bessie C. Vaughn, long-time resident of Merced and widow of former Merced Mayor Dr. James H. Vaughn, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 at the age of 94. Born November 17, 1911 at Milton-Freewater, Umatilla County, Oregon, Bessie Mildred Costley was the third of five children. Her family moved to California in 1919, living first in Oakdale and later Modesto. She graduated from Modesto High School in 1929 and two years later from Modesto Junior College. She married Dr. James H. Vaughn in Merced on March 18, 1939. Dr. Vaughn, a dentist, served on the Merced Planning Commission and City Council, and was Mayor of Merced from 1969 - 1971. A resident of Merced for 67 years, Bess was a member of the Merced Women's Club, Merced Garden Club and Central Presbyterian Church. She was a volunteer precinct worker at elections in Merced for many years. Bess was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, who retired from his dental practice in 1973 and died in 1998. Bess is survived by her god-daughters, Karen Barstow of Turlock and Patricia Hammond of New Hampshire; numerous nephews and nieces, and many friends and neighbors. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home. Private burial will be at the Merced District Cemetery. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Presbyterian Deacon's Hospitality Fund (Bess Vaughn Memorial) 520 West 20th Street or to a favorite charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home.
