Death Takes W. L. Costley
Well Known Resident of Grangeville Expires Suddenly

Washington Lafayette Costley, aged 76, a well-known and old-time resident of Grangeville, died suddenly Friday night in his home in this city. He was ill only three hours.

Mr. Costley was born March 14, 1843, in Dade County, Mo. He was a son of Young Ewing Costley and Cassie Etheridge Costley, being the oldest of nine children.

He served in the Civil war, was a member of the G.A.R., and was one of the few war veterans in Idaho County. His occupation all his life was that of a farmer.

On March 19, 1867, Mr. Costley was married to Margaret Elizabeth Manning in McDonald County, Missouri.

To them were born seven children, two of them died in infancy. The living are: Thomas J. Costley, Young Marion Costley, Mrs. Sarah E. Kerlee, Mrs. Ida J. Austin and Mrs. Ada A. Swain.

Mr. Costley and family lived nine or ten years in McDonald County, Mo., and about the same length of time in Benton County, Arkansas. In September 1885, they came west west, to Idaho County, where they lived ever since.

Mr. Costley was a man among men, was always of a friendly and sociable turn of mind, and was universally liked. Plain, unassuming, industrious, he leaves a host of friends to regret his demise.

The funeral services were conducted from the family home, Sunday afternoon. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery.
