Fred William Carr, better known as "Shorty" Carr, was born to Andrew and Mary E. Carr, April 22, 1881, in Richardson County, near Rulo, Nebraska. He died July 9, 1972 at the Rock County Hospital in Bassett.
In 1883 he moved with his parents to a homestead in Keya Paha County and attended the rural schools here. He worked with his father as a carpenter for several years before he became a farmer and moved to the family homestead where he lived until retirement in 1968. He and Mrs. Carr were living in Springview at the time of his death.
He was married to Anna Laura Wright on May 15, 1910. To them were born three children, Mrs. L.B. (Audrey) Gibson, Armand and Mrs. Ernest (Lois) Philben. Survivors include his wife, three children, eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren; two brothers, Charley, O'Neill, NE, and Ernest, Casper, WY; three sisters, Mrs. Maude Williams, Mrs. Ida Johnson, Lincoln, and Mrs. Hazel Heese; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Claude, Clyde, George and Harry, and three sisters, Mrs. Echo Moles, Mrs. Nettie Dunham, and Mrs. Effie Foreman.
Music and baseball were pasttime activities for Mr. Carr in his youth especially. He enjoyed playing the violin and played on local baseball teams.
Funeral services were held July 12, 1972 at the Springview Auditorium. The Rev. Howard Rice officiated. Pallbearers included Carlyle Cook, Wayne Simons, Clarence Gibson, Ernest Ritterbush, Elmer Schwager, and Wayne Shurtlief. Honorary bearers were Ernest Thiede, Allen Williams, Harry Billings, Jake Otten, Kenneth Cook, Elmer Clay, Scott Kirk and Aubrey Wentworth. Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery at Springview.
