Henry Edward "Ed" Tatum
Henry Edward "Ed" Tatum, 82, of McKinney passed away Aug. 25, 2003. He was born Jan. 28, 1921 to Henry E. and Becky Elizabeth "Bessie" (Scott) Tatum in Myra, Texas. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of McKinney since 1947, where he taught Sunday School for more than fifteen years.
He worked for Duke & Ayres, Inc. for 41 years in the Gainesville, Mineral Wells, and McKinney stores. He worked as a Store Manager and District Supervisor before becoming becoming Vice President of the company, the position from which he retired. He was very involved in the civic activities of McKinney. He served on the McKinney City Council in 1963 and worked for many years on the Board of Equalization and the Board of Adjustment.
He was among the first presidents of the Boys Club. He was also active in the Boy Scouts program and as the organizing president of Little Baseball in McKinney. Ed served on the Red Cross Board and was president of the McKinney Concert Association for one year.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Aug. 1943 until Jan. 1946 in the 15th Tank Battalion of yhre 6th Armored Division under Gen. George Patton. He was awarded the Purple Heart with two clusters, two Bronze Stars, the French Medal of Honor, four Battle Stars, a Presidential citation, and the Good Conduct Medal. He and his wife attended many reunions of the 6th Armored Division. They toured Europe with part of the group visiting locations where they had fought during the war.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Gwen Tatum, son Webb Tatum and wife, Carol of McKinney; grandsons Tommy Tatum and wife, Jennifer of Allen, and Michael Tatum of Dallas; great-grandsons Joey and Anthony Tatum, both of Allen; brothers Bob Tatum of Ft. Worth and Jack Tatum of Corsicana; sisters Ruth Aldridge of Gainesville and Betty Johnson of Garland.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Maggie Acker.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel. Rev. Randy Morlan, Minister with Senior Adults and Pastoral Care for First Baptist Church of McKinney will officiate. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home.
