Lydia Margaret Haun was born near Oakland, MD in Garrett County the daughter of John Haun and Jane Humber(t)son Haun. According to the 1860 US Census Lydia was six months old in Jan 1860 which would make her birthday in 3 Jun 1859; HOWEVER, in the 1870 US Census she is listed as 8 years old and in the 1880 US Census she is listed as 18 years old. The Lydia M. Haun born in 1859 obviously died and they named their next child Lydia M. Haun which would explain the date of birth discrepancy.

Her father, John Haun was first married to Elizabeth White who died in 1839 when she gave birth to their son, William Haun (Hahn). William who is Lydia's half brother was raised by his grandparents. When he grew up, he changed the spelling of his last name to H-A-H-N and this side of the family continues to spell the Haun name Hahn. After his first wife, Elizabeth's death, John Haun married Lydia's mother, Jane Humbertson in 1843.

Besides her parents, John and Jane Humbertson Haun, Lydia's birth family consisted of the following known children:

1) VALINDA(VERLINDA) HAUN (1845-1931) m. Moses Wensell. Both were buried in Lower Cemetery on Route 219. Their graves were moved in August 2007 by the Wensell family to Oakland Cemetery, Oakland, Garrett County, MD.
2) THOMAS JEFFERSON HAUN (1847-1897) m. Lucilla C. buried in West Finley Cemetery, West Finely, Washington County, PA.
3) GEORGE HAUN (1851-1907) m. Celia Ann ?. In the 1880 US Census he and Celia were living in PA. When his mother died in 1894, her obituary lists him living in Pattan, Alabama. Both he and his wife are both buried in Davis Creek Cemetery, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
4) ISAIAH HAUN (1853-1931) m. Mary E. Gauer and m. Elizabeth Warfel. He and Elizabeth are buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Petersburg, Huntingdon County, PA.
5) SARAH RHODA HAUN (1858-1919)wife of Moses and George S. Biggs. Sarah and George S. Biggs are buried in Lower Cemetery on Route 219 2 1/2 miles South of Oakland.
6) LYDIA MARGARET HAUN - THIS MEMORIAL (1862-1938)
7) WINFIELD SCOTT HAUN (1863-1941) m. Phoebe Jane King and is buried in Claysville Cemetery, Claysville, Washington County, Pa.
8) BESSIE HAUN (1866-?) (listed in the 1880 Census as 14 years old, but not listed in her mother's obituary in 1894)
9) MOLLIE HAUN (1870-?)(listed in the 1880 Census as 10 years old, but not listed in her mother's obituary in 1894)

Lydia Haun was the birth mother of John William Miller born 26 Oct 1876 in PA when Lydia was quite young - she would have been about 14 years old. He more than likely was raised by one or more of Lydia's older sibling(s). Ten years later, Lydia Haun was single when she married George W. Poland on 10 Mar 1886 according to Garrett County, Maryland marriage records - George was 22 and Lydia was 25 years old. This marriage ended in divorce. When George W. Poland's married for the second time he was listed as divorced. John William Miller continued to maintain a relationship with George Poland as evidenced by John William Miller and his future wife, Sarah Eunice Wotring being witnesses at George's second marriage confirmed by a wedding photograph of the happy couple with John William Miller and Sarah Eunice Wotring. According to East Coast family lore, at some point Lydia left with a drummer and went west never to be heard from again (some say to Wheeling, WV, but can't confirm). Her son, John William Miller kept the photograph taken of her last day he saw his mother for the remainder of his life - he died in Shenandoah County, VA in 1962 (see photo in this memorial). In the 1910 US Census Maggie Haun Miller is listed as having had 5 children with 5 still living; however, there are only three children listed in the 1910 U.S. Census: Harry, Charles, and Margaret Mae. The son listed as Henry who was born in Nov 1899 must be Harry O. Miller, so therefore I believe that the 1910 Census was erroneous.
Her children with James Wallace Miller are:

Harry Oscar Miller b. 1899
Charles C. Miller
Margaret Mae "Maggie" Miller married Clarence Barrie and had 3 children

When Lydia's mother, Jane Humber(t)son Haun, died on 29 Apr 1894, Lydia Polan(d)was listed in her mother's obituary as a surviving daughter. It should be noted that the obituary for Jane was probably written by some of those who preferred the H-A-H-N spelling since the obituary spells the Haun name with a second H as Hahn. Notably, Lydia remained lost to her East Coast Family for the next 117 years.

Recently her West Coast Family contacted the East Coast Family through Findagrave and reported that Lydia (Maggie as she became known) was married about 1895 about a year after her mother's death to James Wallace Miller also of Maryland. Lydia and James Wallace Miller lived in Iowa where two sons were born, HARRY OSCAR MILLER 26 NOV 1899 - 3 MAY 1983 and Charles C. Miller in 4 FEB 1902 - 4 MAR 1988. The family moved to Washington state where their daughter Margaret Mae Miller was born on October 18, 1904. Lydia Margaret "Maggie" Haun Miller and her husband, James Wallace Miller remained in Washington state for the remainder of their lives and are both buried in the Kirkland Cemetery, Kirkland, King County, Washington. Lydia's death certificate lists her birth as 3 Jun 1862 and death as 14 Jun 1938.

Interesting to note: In the 1910 Census Lydia is listed as having 5 children with 5 children still living; however, there were only 3 children listed in the 1910 census, Harry, Charles, and Margaret Mae and if you add my grandfather that only makes 4. Not sure who the 5th child was.

Note: Also interesting to note - the photographs of Lydia's cemetery marker was taken by the GGgrandson of Lydia's brother, Isaiah Haun, who took them while he was living in the Seattle area and added them to this memorial in 2010.
