Phil served as a medic in Italy and France during World War II. While in Southern France during the second invasion front, he was putting a wounded man on a house door when a mortar round came in, exploded and hit both him and the man he was trying to rescue. Phil's leg was wounded and he was never the same after the war. He was in pain until the day he died.

He was awarded The Bronze Star for his efforts and also a Purple heart.

Phil never married nor had any children. He was always a kind man with a soft voice. His favorite song was "Three Coins in a Fountain."

Philip was the 3rd great grandson of the famous explorer Colonel Daniel Boone. He was the great-grandson of the Missouri pioneers Thomas and Lydia Taylor.
