Marshall and Effie were farmers in the outskirts of El Centro for decades. They had four boys, Marshall, Lynn, Russell and Donald and three girls, Bea, Alice and LaVerne.

When the kids had grown and left home, they moved into town for a few years but finally moved to San Diego in 1952. After 2-1/2 years in San Diego, Marshall, who was known to suffer depression, hung himself with a rope from the rafters of their garage in the back of their house. It is said that he missed the farm, the desert and El Centro.
