Martin was baptised: 26 Dec 1830
Event Place: NORDERHOV PARISH, BUSKERUD flyke, NORWAY

At the age of 19 Martin came to the United States with his parents Bottolf Bottolfsen , Marthe M Andersdatter brother Nils and sister Karen.
They embarked at Drammen Norway on the ship Christiane who's Capt was Chr. Tofte. The ship arrived at New York on July 16th 1850.
From NY they went by steam boat and canal to Millwaukee, Wisconsin and by post horses to Beloit Wisconsin, from there Martin went to Galena Illinois where he clerked for several years, working part time at his trade, which was tailoring. While in Galena he became well acquainted with General U. S. Grant, who later became U.S. A. President. U. S. Grant's father's store was next door to Martin's place of employment and they spent many evenings smoking and visiting outside on upturned soap boxes, small town fashion. (records have been unearthed to prove Martin and Grant were in Galena at the same time and the stores were next to each other)
Martin and Mari Svendsdatter Loeng became acquainted in Galena Illinois and they decided to go to Paint Creek Twp (Waterville) Allamakee County Iowa to visit the rest of Martin's family. Martin and Mari were married there at Paint Creek by Rev Koren on May 6, 1856 and settled on a farm, (Martin purchased land from Lars Arneson and wife Ragnet on July 12, 1856, page 496, Section 25, township 97, range 4, also bought land in Section 12, about 160 acres which was located about 2 miles West of his brother Nils Bottolfson’s homestead) Land records show that Martin made a large profit when selling his land, this profit was used for the trip and settling in Cedar Co NE in the spring of 1869.

Martin became a Citizen of the United States on 21 Sept 1860 in District Court in Waukon, Allamakee County Iowa.

In the spring of 1869 they went to Cedar County Nebraska and homesteaded on a farm there, Range 2E Section 23 NW 14, 7 miles NE of what would become Hartington in a community then known as Paragon.
Martin applied for homestead land on May 19, 1869 at Dakota City, NE application number 883. The homestead was proved up May 10, 1876, with the following information, (settled on the land on May 19, 1869 has built a house of logs, 16 by 18 feet with 2 doors, 2 windows and it is a good comfortable home to live in. He also has made the following improvements, built a stable, corn crib, granary, hog pens, shed, hen house, root house, and planted 2 acres of timber, document also states that by 1876 Martin and Mari had six children)
They were one of the first familys homesteading in that community, 1869, the same year the transcontinental railroad was finished (May 10, 1869). The log house is still standing on the homestead farm as of the year 2016 and is in possession of a great grandson.
