Benjamin M. Bottolfson was born June 30, 1858, Paint Creek twp, Waterville, Allamakee Co. IA, per his daughter Vera's diary.
There is an error in the Old East Paint Creek Church records that shows (Bendik), Benjamin M. Bottolfson born 1855. It was said that records added at a later date and by the Pastor at that time, were sometimes in error. All other records show his birth date as 1858.
Benjamin M. Bottolfsen was 11 years old when he came with his parents, Martin and Mari Bottolfsen from Allamakee Co. Iowa to the Paragon Community of Cedar County Nebraska in 1869. This area is about 7 miles NE of Hartington, NE. The family homesteaded in the Paragon area.
Benjamin must have had a restless nature, as he did not stay in one place very long, that is, until in his later years when he settled in Des Moines Iowa and was there for many years.
His first marriage was to: Mary (Margit) Grimsgard on Feb 18, 1891. In Calcasieu Parish Louisiana. It is possible that Ben and Mary ran away to Louisiana to marry.
It is also possible that Ben and Mary met in Waterville, or knew each other before his parents took him at age 11 to Cedar County, Nebraska.
Witness's for the marriage: Charley Inderstrodt, Oline Grimsgard, H. H. Hanson, Pastor of German Lutheran Church was: F. Gellert.
It is thought that Mary (Margit) may be the child of: Ole C. Grimsgard Jan 31, 1823-Apr 17, 1903. His wife Barbro C. Jan 18, 1825-Mar 17, 1889. OEPC record. (Ole was from Hallingdal Norway.
Mary died of TB after only being married a year. She is buried at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church Waterville, Allamakee Co. IA.
Mary (Margit) Grimsgard, b 1859, Died Aug 27, 1892, age 33 yr, 5 m, 15 d, buried Aug 28, 1892. There were no children.
There is a story handed down in family lore, that when living in the Painted Creek area, (unknown as to which time) that Benjamin became very sick and it was thought that he had died. He was laid out and in his coffin, when someone saw his hand move and he recovered and lived a long life. This story was told both in the Cedar County Nebraska area as well as having been recalled in the Paint Creek Area of Allamakee, Co. Iowa. I do not have access to Newspaper records, which may record this event.

As early as 1891, we know Benjamin had gone back to the Painted Creek Area of Allamakee County Iowa. He is shown as being postmaster At Waterville, Allamakee, Co. IA on Jan 6, 1892. and then again on July 6, 1899.
On Feb 7, 1894 he married Thora Jensen at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church.
His first child Bernhard M. was born Nov 22, 1894 in Waterville, IA, as were his second, third and fourth, as follows: Carl William, May 12, 1897, Christian, April 10, 1899, buried OEPC Lutheran Cemetery, Vera Mary Elizabeth, Sept 3, 1900, and baptized at OEPC on Oct 14, 1900.
On Mar 17, 1904 his 5th child, Ruth Louise was born in Decorah, IA. The 6th child Ralph was born 1906 also in Decorah, IA.
Ben lived for a time in Decorah, Iowa, living at one time on Ohio Street and on Mechanics St in Decorah at another time. He also lived again at Hartington, Nebraska , where his 7th child Carolyn Otilla was born on Apr 25, 1909, she is buried at the Hartington City Cemetery. Benjamin was employed in Hartington in a butcher shop. In May of 1925 Ben was living in Canton, South Dakota, he also lived there in 1926 and 1927, (per addresses on letters). (Ben and family shown in 1920 Lincoln Co. SD census) It appears that he was co-owner of a business by the name of Hart and Bottolfson at 369 Causeway St. in Canton. A receipt dated May 9, 1925 shows that they bought 10 doz railroad picks, @ 10.00 per doz, 6 doz. meat choppers @ 12.00 per doz. 12 doz axes at 12.00 per dozen, 20 doz Try squares at 2.50 per doz.
