Mattie Dixon, born December 24, 1884, in Louisiana, was the only child born to the union of Jason Dixon and Willie Jackson Dixon. Her mother died shortly after Mattie was born, leaving Jason to raise his daughter himself. Mattie's uncle and aunt, Joe and Mary Dixon, were strong influences in her upbringing during the period that Mattie was a member of their household.

Mattie received her education and religious training in her home state, where she later taught school prior to her marriage.

Mattie eloped with her sweetheart, Edmond Lewis, and they were married on February 15, 1902 in Clarksville, Texas. Ten children, five boys and five girls, were born to this union.

Mattie passed away peacefully on February 13, 1950 in Bogata, Texas at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Oscar and Jodie Ann Lewis. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Edmond; and one daughter, Bobbie Lee Lewis.

Her survivors include five sons: Sampson, Zebedee, and Gavin Lewis, all of Clarksville, Oscar Lewis of Bogata; and Jason Lewis of Stockton, CA; four daughters: Edwina Nelson, Lucille Lewis and Ollie Vett Young, all of Clarksville, and Barneta (Juanita) Behn of Paris, TX; approximately 48 grandchildren and approximately 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

It was Mattie's wishes that her son-in-law, Rev. Mosely L. Behn, give the eulogy at her funeral, and her wishes were honored, and he gave an eloquent eulogy for his mother-in-law whom he loved so dearly.
