Harry W. Scharf, 79, Portsmouth, Virginia, formerly of Fort Dodge, died Aug. 30, 1996, Portsmouth, Virginia. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at North Lawn Cemetery, Fort Dodge, with the Rev. Arthur Wolz Jr., officiating. Visitation will be Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the Gunderson Funeral Home in Fort Dodge.
He is survived by his daughters, Ramona Cook, Elkton, Md., Sally Lear, Portmouth, Va., Vicki Wolz of Mechanicsville, Va., eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother Arthur Scharf, Fort dodge. He was precided in death by his wife, Rachel, son Keith Alan Scharf, parents Henry and Elsie Scharf, and sisters Hattie Larson, Rose Hood, Gertie Steberg, Mariam Brown, Blanche Schmoker and Grace Porter.
Harry W. Scharf was born December 16, 1916, in Fort Dodge. He married Rachel Porter in Fort Dodge in 1937. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was employed by Georgia Pacific for 44 years and at the time of his retirement was the manager of the Milford Joint System Plant in Milford, VA.
He was active in the Beazley Seniors Center in Portsmouth and was supportive of the Bennetts Creek Rescue Squad. He was a member of the Bowling Green United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, Virginia.
