Childress – Jake Forest Lawrence, whose family was among the first to settle in the Arlie area, died in Collingsworth General Hospital at 12:10 a.m.. Friday, June 16, 1972. He had been ill about three months. Mr. Lawrence was 69 years old and lived in the Arlie community all his life until he and Mrs. Lawrence moved into Wellington two months ago. Their home is 1209 East Avenue. A farmer all of his adult life, Mr. Lawrence was a quiet unassuming man who by choice devoted himself to his family, his land, and his community, for which he sought those things that would make life better. He was the son of Levi and Nancy Payne Lawrence, and was born at Arlie, September 15, 1902. He was married to Miss Della Wyrick, a member of another pioneer Arlie family, on January 3, 1926, at Hollis. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. Funeral services were conducted at First United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. James Boswell, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kelso Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Pete Nippert, A. V. Lowrie, Fred Covey, Art Kane, Bonner Stephens and Jess Key of Childress. Surviving Mr. Lawrence are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Guthrie of Carbondale, Colorado; 5 sisters, Mrs. Ura Scott, Mrs. Mary Scott, and Mrs. Lucille West of Wellington; Mrs. Georgia Lemley of Nazareth, Panama; and Mrs. Florence Moore of Canyon; and two grandchildren, Miss Pam Guthrie and Nicky Guthrie of Carbondale, Colorado.
