Mrs. Henrietta Owen Handley, who lived in Wellington many years and continued to regard this as her home for another 23 years, died in Arlington Thursday night, October 23. She had observed her 100th birthday on April 27. She was the mother of the late Bura 0. Handley, long-time Wellington city manager. Mrs. Handley was born in Caldwell County April 27, 1880 and educated in a one-room log school. She and Mr. Handley were married there in 1897. In 1903, the family moved to Eldorado, Indian Territory, and during the winter of 1907, Mr. Handley purchased a track out of the old Shoenail Ranch on the banks of Red River in Childress County. Mrs. Handley recalled that her husband "stretched tent" where the family lived until spring, when he finished a half-dugout. They broke sod and hauled water from a dirt tank. The Handley family came to Collingsworth County a few years later, and most of the time, lived north of Wellington, where Mrs. Handley was famous for her hospitality.
She was fond of travel, and reminded her descendants that she had traveled in everything from an oxcart to airplane. After Mr. Handley's death in 1957, she moved to Arlington to be near several of her children. Mr. and Mrs. Handley were active members of the Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Handley are 6 children, Jess Handley, Mrs. Ruby Baldridge and Mrs. Ina Conner of Arlington; J. Bee Handley of Paradise, Calif., Mrs. Vella Mae Thompson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Faye Lee of La Lux, New Mexico. There are 14 grandchildren, 26 greatgrandchildren and four great great-grandchildren. Col Phil Handley of Newport News, Va., is a grandson and Mrs. Bura Handley, a daughter-in-law.
