Ted Tamagni Passes After 5-Year-Illiness

Dies of Heart Ailment of Long Standing

Last rites were held in Calistoga yesterday (Wednesday) morning for Theodore Forrest [sic] "Ted" Tamagni, a member of one of Napa County's best-known families, whose death occurred in the local hospital last Sunday morning, July 22.

Ted, one of eight sons of former Supervisor Charlie Tamagni, had been ill for nearly six years with a heart ailment that was believed to have been the aftermath of having had rheumatic fever in childhood. Many times in recent years he had been confined to his bed, and many times his condition had been pronounced as critical, but he always had a strong will to live and had made several remarkable partial recoveries.

He was taken ill just a few days before his passing and Friday night was moved to the hospital. He died about 8:30 Sunday morning.

Ted was a native of this area, having been born in Knights Valley on May 5, 1906 to Charles and Margherita Tamagni, who then operated a dairy on the place now known as the Lew Cook ranch. The family later moved to the Tucker District, where some of Ted's brothers still operate the Tamagni Dairy.

In his boyhood, Ted attended local schools, and later took employment in several places in town, until he became a county employee. For quite a number of years, he served as sealer for the Napa County Department of Weights and Measures. It was from this job that he retired over five years ago, when poor health forced him to curtail his activities.

In 1932, he married Miss Carolyn Weber in a ceremony that took place in Reno. They became the parents of two children — Theodore George "Teddy" Tamagni of Calistoga and Miss Nancy Tamagni, now of Berkeley.

Surviving relatives include the wife and two children, Ted's father, Charlie Tamagni of Angwin, who served this district as supervisor for over 30 years; and the following brothers and sisters: Frank Tamagni, Emma Wolleson, Charles Tamagni Jr. of Chowchilla, Elvin Tamagni, Lawrence "Dick" Tamagni, Evelyn Snodgrass, Walter Tamagni Sr. and Harry "Cub" Tamagni. Another brother George passed away in 1932. There are also numerous nieces and nephews.

Fishing was Ted's main hobby and remarkable mechanical ability was his outstanding talent. In emergencies, Calistogans often called on ted to fix something mechanical for them, and he always responded when health permitted.

He was a member and past master of Calistoga Lodge, No. 233, F. & A. M., and was a past president and 25-year member of Calistoga Parlor, No. 86, Native Sons of the Golden West. He was also a charter member of Cups and Saucers, a local men's club, and was formerly a member of the Calistoga Rotary Club.

The funeral service was held at 10 o'clock yesterday morning at the Simic Chapel with members of the Masonic order giving their ritual. Acting as worshipful master was Past Master Haven Chandler and serving as chaplain was Worshipful Master Harold Reeder.

Graveside rites at the St. Helena Cemetery were conducted by Native Sons, with Walter Heitz as president; Ed Ottonello, past president; and Al Triglia, first vice president.

Performing the duties of casket bearers were Frank E. Pocai, Conrad Weil Jr., Ted Weil, George Radelfinger, Julius Caiccoa of St. Helena and Louis Carlenzoli.
