Although naturalization papers filled out years later indicate another vessel, Edward Weber, son of Samuel and Rosette Weber, appears to have arrived in New York aboard the SS Frisia, in some records as Fresia, on Nov. 27, 1878. The passenger list indicates he had come from Hamburg & Havre with his wife Bertha, 34, daughters Clara, 9, and Adele, 6, and son Emil, 8 months. Daughters Elizabeth, Laura and Anne may also have made the trip, though they're not listed in the passenger list. His brother, Gustave soon followed in 1880. Another brother, Ewald, came from Germany in 1881. The Webers sought to avoid service in the Prussian army and apparently found a sponsor who led them to Evansville, Ind. Initially, Edward, who apparently had been a farmer in his native Germany, worked as a watchman and lived at 204 Lower Fifth Ave. in Evansville. Soon, more children were on the way. Daughter Elina, or Lena, was born in 1880, Emma in 1881, son Gustave in 1883 and daughter Carrie 1885. By 1895 he was a cabinet maker and harness maker living at 407 Mary Street in Evansville. It appears in 1895, he returned to Germany for a time before coming back to Evansville. It's unclear why. Perhaps there was a death in the family in Germany. By 1920, Edward and Bertha owned a home at 1514 Third Ave. in Evansville. He died of pneumonia and prostate cancer at home on Feb. 10, 1926 in Evansville and is buried at Locust Hill Cemetery.
